Does My Child Need Early Treatment?

           Are you wondering if your child needs braces or early treatment? It is a great idea to set up a consultation appointment with your orthodontist. Are you trying to figure out what age to set up an appointment for your child? The answer varies per child but the best age to have your child seen is 7. Most 7-year-olds have begun to grow some of their adult teeth. Does your child need to have all their adult teeth in before they are seen? No, most early treatment begins while they still have some of their baby teeth.

         The goal of early treatment is to intercept any developing problems, eliminate the cause, guide the growth of facial and jaw bones, and provide adequate space for incoming permanent teeth. A patient may require a second course of treatment after all permanent teeth have come in to move those teeth into their best positions.

         Congratulations on the addition to your family! This is an exciting time for you and your new bundle of joy. Though, there can be some downsides; feet swelling, heart burn, cavities, and teeth shift. Now do not panic. This blog may not help with the feet welling or heart burn, though we can help and explain about your teeth changes.

  </span>
  <div>
    <br/>
  </div>
  <div>

          You have probably noticed that your hormones are changing, from the moment you find out that you are expecting to after you have delivered your little angel. These changes increase the acidity in your mouth, leading to increased cavities. With the changes in your hormones, it can affect your sugar intake due to new cravings and decrease the attention to prevention to your dental care.

  </div>
  <div>
    <br/>
  </div>
  <div>

          Once you are in your second and third trimester your body’s inflammatory response increases and your body begins to secrete Relaxin. Relaxin is a hormone produced to relaxes your ligaments prepare your body for childbirth. This great because you are about to bring a life into the world but it does mean the rest of your body’s ligaments are also loose which leads to your teeth shifting.

  </div>
  <div>
    <br/>
  </div>
  <div>
    <span>

           Your teeth shifting does not mean you are more likely loose your teeth, though you will have to keep up with your dental routine.

         Are you worried that your braces are going to ruin your Halloween? What if I told you that that is simply not true and that you can still have a ghoulishly good time? There are some candies that you will want to trade with your friends or family because you need to avoid them, but you can swap those for ones that are safe for braces.

November is always a good time to throw away your diet and pig out! Always avoid sticky and chewy things so that you won’t break your brackets.

Then take a great plunge into them, making an explosion of leaves all over the street. Then hurry to do it all over again.

           What is a Vegan? Veganism is a type of vegetarian diet that excludes meat, eggs, dairy products and all other animal-derived ingredients. Many vegans also do not eat foods that are processed using animal products such as refined white sugar and some wines. Most vegans also avoid the use of all products tested on animals as well as animal-derived non-food products, such as leather, fur and wool.

           Each day drunk drivers are being arrested for driving after drinking too much. Drunk driving cost people $135 billion annually. With $51 billion is just due to the accidents that they are involved in. Drunk drivers are always at fault when they are in an accident even if the other driver caused the accident. The more that one drinks the higher the chance of them getting into an accident. For our patients that are 21 or older please drink responsibly. Remember to always have a designated driver to help keep you safe this holiday season.

           The month of November is a chance to enjoy the time that we have with our families. We give thanks that we have them. We give thanks that we can put food on our tables and love in our hearts. Almost every family in America celebrates Thanksgiving in some way. Many spend it with their families, but many people choose to spend their time helping the less fortunate. They celebrate by making and preparing food to give to the homeless and to those who do not have enough money to provide a thanksgiving dinner. This time of year, there are many food drives. Next time you go to the store remember to pick up a few extra canned goods. That way when the scouts stop by, or schools are asking you to make donations, you won’t have to make a trip out. This is also the month to start thinking about the winter holiday and buying things for your friends and loved ones. There are many places that you can donate gifts, new or used coats, shoes and toys to give to those who have little or nothing.

         Fall is in the air this month, and the trees will begin to change colors. Be prepared to see Century Orthodontics staff in their Halloween Garb. Remember to wear your costume this month and receive an extra coin and maybe even a photo on the wall of Fame. This month is our newspaper’s sixth birthday!! The statue of Liberty’s birthday is October 28th. Who could forget Halloween on the 31st?

           This museum show cases a man’s motorcycle collection. There are motorcycles that range in age from as early as the 1900’s and new as 2000’s. That’s a century of creative design changes over the years. This would be a great place to visit on a early release day from school. They ask to call before going to make sure they are open for public viewing. Here is the website:

           Grandparent’s Day is a day to remember how great it is to have grandparents and to remember all the great things that they do for us. This is a day to get to know them better and spend time learning about how their life is going. Grandparent’s Day is September 9th this year so please remember to give them a hug. If they don’t live close enough for a hug, give a phone call to brighten their day.

           Did you know that there are books that are banned from some schools and libraries around the United States and the world? These books are banned because of their content. Some of these books over the years have been changed so that they can be used in all areas. The last week in September is a banned book week. You may celebrate it however you’d like.

           Our brains are cross-wired. The left hemisphere (right hand control) controls speech, language, writing, logic, mathematics, and science. It is the linear thinking mode. The right hemisphere (left hand control) controls music, art, creativity, perception, emotions, and genius. It is the holistic thinking mode. 10 to 15 percent of humankind is left-handed.

           Does a toddler you know not like to brush their teeth? Well, here is a great idea to help him/her get clean healthy teeth and gums. Have a sock puppet brush the toddler’s teeth for them. First, let the child brush the puppet’s teeth, and then its time for the puppet to brush the child’s teeth. This a great way to get a child interested in having good oral hygiene.

           If you are traveling out of the country, you should consider seeing your regular dentist to have a check up and a cleaning and to make sure all your dental work is up to date. While you are out of the country, you may have a hard time finding dental professional if you have a dental emergency. It may also be very expensive and limit your vacation experience.

           The 2nd week of August is Elvis week, the king of rock’n’roll. This king really knew how to shake his hips and wow a crowd of screaming beautiful girls. This crowd pleaser was known for his handsome looks and his way with music and dance style. Remember him this week by playing one of his songs.

         Please remember when you are thinking about adding a new pet to your family that there are so many pets out there just waiting to be rescued. Rescued pets may not be babies but they still need love and attention. These pets can be a great addition to your family and can already be potty trained.

          Arbor Day this year is the 28th of April. What is Arbor Day you ask? On this day we help to replenish one of our Earth’s natural resources by planting trees. This will help our environment and give a healthy supply of oxygen to our Earth. So remember to plant a tree.

          The month of April is a month of laughs and practical jokes. Maybe this is the reason so many of our famous comedians and funny people were born in this month. Some of the funny people are David Letterman, Eddie Murphy, George Lopez, Carol Barnett, Jay Leno, and Jerry Seinfeld.

          Did you know during the day you swallow 2,000 times? This helps flush away bacteria. At night you swallow about 20 times, this is why it is so important to brush your teeth before you go to sleep. Braces straighten your teeth, but they can also help rid your face of wrinkles and trade them in for a beautiful smile. Did you know that teeth maybe considered feminine? Feminine teeth tend to be rounded and soft where as male teeth are more angular with straighter edges.

          Century Orthodontics is supporting going green this month. If you wear green or recycle something into art and you take a picture of it, you will receive extra ortho coins. In the entry way there are some ideas on how to be greener in your home and how to give green gifts. This could be helpful when planning a party, buying a gift, buying groceries and driving your car.

          Did you know that your favorite color really does say something about the way people think and feel? Colors can change the mood that you are in and even make you feel better about yourself. Warm colors are stimulating while cool colors are relaxing. Neutral colors are colors that blend you into the crowd and are less noticeable; they can have a calming effect on people. Learning the psychology of color can help bring you to a better mindset. March 2nd marks the day when writer, poet and cartoonist, Theodor Seuss Geisel, was born. When you wake up have your green eggs and ham, and make sure the cat is not wearing a hat but most of all go see the Lorax movie it comes out March 2nd, 2012. This would have been Dr. Seuss’ 108th birthday.

          The second week in March is dedicated to reading and returning books back to the library. Make sure you search around the house to gather all of the books you have borrowed and return them. If you have any books that you are finished reading, bring them in to share with our patients. We love good books and so do our patients.

          On the last day in March everyone around the world is suppose to turn off their lights off from 8:30pm-9:30 pm to save energy. The amount of power that will be saved in that hour will help conserve our Earth and be an environmentally safe way to do so. Here is a link for more information:

          Ground Hog Day is February 2nd. This is the day when a ground hog does the weather forecasting. If he doesn’t see his shadow, 6 more weeks of winter; but if he sees his shadow, spring is on its way.

There are so many ways to help make this planet healthier and save it for the children of the future if we just give a little time to make better choices. I have found a few educational websites that I will post in the office to help make it easier to do a little good for our planet.

         Welcome winter in December by warming your heart to friends and family. Don’t forget to feed your feathered friends and woodland creatures. The Farmer’s Almanac suggests that this winter could be the coldest St. Louis has seen in a very long time. December 3rd is Earmuff Day so fight the cold in your favorite pair of earmuffs.

          This world wide month promotes personal life planning by encouraging people to celebrate their past success and reach for the stars, by looking at their future success in year long blocks. The first year they celebrate the month by developing a plan that considers family, friendships, work, faith, education, health, sports, and entertainment. Then every subsequent year they evaluate, modify, and institute their revised plan. So, every December people reach for the stars as they develop or revise their life plans.

          Sports safety is a very important thing to think about when getting involved with any sport. In the past it was seen as un- cool to wear a helmet when riding a bike, but in some cities in the US laws are passed to enforce the importance of wearing one for your safety. By spending $20 on a bike helmet, you could not only save yourself from a concussion but also your life. When playing any sports where you could get hit in the mouth a mouth guard is needed. People don’t realize that wearing a mouth guard decreases the odds of injury to your lips teeth and even your brain. When protective mouth wear is worn correctly, it can decrease the chance of getting a concussion. Mouth guards can range anywhere from $5-$150, but rehabilitation costs for a single tooth knocked out can surpass the price of a custom-made mouth guard by 20 times. December 5th, is the Day of the Ninja. Lurking behind every mask on this day hides the face of a ninja. On this day we give thanks to these special masters of the art of sneak attack. To celebrate this special day, wear all black and make sure not to forget the mask. Hold a ninja themed party and make sure all of your guests know how to arrive stealth fully. Have ninja noodles and pose like a ninja for photos. Remind the photographer to be fast because it’s almost impossible to catch a ninja on film.

         This is the month of thanks. Think about all the things that you hold special in your heart and be thankful that you are lucky enough to have them. November is always a good time to throw away your diet and pig out! Always avoid sticky and chewy things so that you won’t break your brackets.

If you love to carve pumpkins but hate dealing with the mess, Michael’s Craft store sells hollow fake pumpkins that are great for carving.

          November 17th is America’s day for a better future. This is a day when people give up smoking for the day. This day was created to help people give up their nasty habit and also to help save the environment. This day also reminds people that smoking kills so many every year, and if you quit smoking right now, your body will thank you. www.preventionpartners.com

          Young readers week is one of the most important weeks of the whole year. In 1989 Pizza Hut and Library of Congress got together to encourage kids to read. Reading is a unique skill to help improve the growth of learning. Read to your children or have them read to you. Books are always a great gift. (holiday hint)

          If you are looking for a “GOOD” book to read sometimes this can be very difficult. There is a great place online to help you keep track of the books you have read and the ones that you want to. You can type reviews of the books you’ve read to remind you how good or bad they were. You can see what friends are reading, their reviews, and what they plan on reading next. You can choose your favorite authors and the site will give you ideas for what to read next. You can even find the books you want to read by linking directly to Amazon.com. If you would like to sign up go to:

          What is a Vegan? Veganism is a type of vegetarian diet that excludes meat, eggs, dairy products and all other animal-derived ingredients. Many vegans also do not eat foods that are processed using animal products such as refined white sugar and some wines. Most vegans also avoid the use of all products tested on animals as well as animal-derived non-food products, such as leather, fur and wool.

          Grandparent’s Day is a day to remember how great it is to have grandparents and to remember all the great things that they do for us. This is a day to get to know them better and spend time learning about how their life is going. Grandparent’s Day is September 12th this year so please remember to give them a hug. If they don’t live close enough for a hug, give a phone call to brighten their day.

         How do I clean my retainers?

</h3>
<div data-rss-type="text">

         Cleaning

  <b>

          traditional retainers

  </b>

         is very easy. When you are brushing your teeth, take your tooth brush and brush your retainer. For a more “deep” clean you may use a denture cleaner or Retainer Brite. This allows bubbles to clean particles away from your retainer. Follow the instructions on the box. If you have metal wires on your retainer, don’t leave your retainer in the cleaner for extended times because this can weaken the wires.

  <div>
    <br/>

          Cleaning

    <b>

           Essix retainers

    </b>

          or

    <b>

           Invisalign

    </b>

          type retainers can be very easy also. Clean your aligner prior to each insertion. First use a liquid soap to make a lather in your hand and place the aligner in hand. Then scrub aligner with hands. For a more accurate clean you may use a cue tip. We ask you to use a mild liquid soap. This liquid soap may be anti-bacterial if you wish. Some patients prefer liquid soaps that are scented. Do NOT use mouth wash. The coloring can stain your aligners and make them more visible. Toothpaste can be abrasive to the plastic in your aligners. The scratches can collect bacteria causing discoloration and an odor.

  </div>
  <div>
    <br/>
  </div>
  <div>

          “Oops I dropped my retainer in the trash!”

  </div>
  <div>
    <br/>
  </div>
  <div>

          Going into the trash can be the worst scenario for a retainer. Even if the retainer is found, many patients don’t want to put the retainer back in their mouth. The best way to really clean your retainer is to brush it with an old toothbrush and get rid of any particles. Then you can dip the retainer in peroxide or rubbing alcohol. If you want, you may bring it into us, and we will clean it for you.

    <b>

           REMEMBER

    </b>

          : if you lose your retainer or break it there is a charge.

          St. Louis is famous for many things that are only found in St. Louis. We have many foods that were created here and haven’t left. Toasted Ravioli were created in 1943 on accident and are ravioli that have been deep-fried and crusted. Dr. C’s favorite dessert is a St. Louis created dessert that you can’t find anywhere else, Gooey Butter Cake. Our Famous St. Louis style pizza is not only the thinnest crust but it also has a St. Louis style cheese Provel. Even Concretes from Ted Drewe’s are a St. Louis only.

          Summer is a great time to get a tan. The summer sun feels great on your skin until a sunburn burns your spirits. Century Orthodontics wanted to remind all of our patients and their families to wear suntan lotion and reapply every two hours to protect your skin from a serious burn. Your skin is very important and even if your tan looks great now, you may not when you are older. UV rays that make you look tan can damage the elastic parts of your skin which intensifies wrinkles, and also can give you freckles and skin cancer. Wear a hat and keep the suntan lotion on to help prevent burns and skin damage. To get the most protection, experts recommend applying sunscreen 20 minutes before heading outdoors and 20 minutes after being outdoors and then reapplying every two until dark. Don’t forget important parts like scalp, ears, and tops of feet and back of your neck. To check the UV forecast visit:

          Many of our patients wear rubber bands. The question is why do you wear rubber bands? The answer is for many different reasons. Rubber bands can fix a patient’s bite, close spaces, and rotate teeth. Many people find these rubber bands very annoying, and they are but they are very important to help finish your treatment. Rubber bands can be worn in many different ways. So if the doctor says its time for rubber bands, please make sure you understand how to wear them properly and for the right amount of time. If you are wearing them full time, this means 24/7 except for eating and brushing. Also remember to change the rubber bands 3-4 times daily.

          The teeth of American’s can differ from the areas that they live and also by the habits that they have. Cities that made the top 100 were cities that had a high level of fluoride in the water. These patients see the dentist on a regular 6 month basis, and that floss on a regular basis. It is very important to use the fluoride rinse that we provide and to also not only brush your teeth but floss for good oral hygiene.

          Arbor day this year is the 28th of April. What is Arbor Day you ask? On this day we help to replenish our Earth of its natural resources by planting trees. This will help our environment and give a healthy supply of oxygen to our Earth. So remember to plant a tree today.

Maybe this is the reason that they all bring us so many great laughs.

At nighttime you only swallow about 20 times, this is why it is so important to brush your teeth before you go to sleep. Braces straighten your teeth, but they can also help rid your face of wrinkles and trade them in for a beautiful smile. Did you know that teeth can be feminine? Feminine teeth tend to be rounded and soft where as male teeth are more angular with straighter edges.
