Dr. Waxlers Sculptures
Artist’s Statement:Anyone visiting any of our three offices can’t help but notice the strange "sculptures" that are scattered about. These, and many more at my home, are the result of my lifelong fascination with metal parts and odds and ends. I have had no art training (easy to tell, isn’t it!) and I only began creating these sculptures in the last 10 years. Perhaps this is also the reason why I find orthodontics with all its gadgets so interesting. It also allows me to be creative, because everybody wants their teeth to look the same (straight) so I can’t be creative in my work! The use of everyday objects to construct sculpture goes back at least 90 years to the work of Marcel Duchamp and the Dada art movement. Some of the terms used to describe this type of work are "found object art," "readymade," or "assemblage." Some of the objects I have used include bicycles, exercise machines, irons, old dental equipment, car parts, pool balls, toys, electronic equipment, ductwork, pipe, springs, clothes hangers, CDs, and just plain junk. Whether out of fear that no one would buy one or my inability to give away my "creations," I’ve never had a showing or tried to sell any of these sculptures.
